Burns's collection of 15 multicultural life stories fills in gaps in the male-dominated histories of Michigan. The selection of Civil War soldier Emma Edmonds (who dressed in men's clothes), landscaper Genevieve Gillette, frontier settler Marie-Therese Cadillac, Jewish labor organizer Myra Wolfgang, and black politician Cora Brown Cora Mea Brown (born April 19, 1914 - December 17, 1972), was the first African-American woman elected to a United States state senate, winning a seat in the Michigan State Senate in 1952.  invigorates the text with varied skills, historical settings, and styles of involvement. Contributing to the text are valuable pictures, like the snapshots of Marguerite deAngeli as a child and as an adult and the sketch of Laura Smith Haviland's Raisin raisin, in botany and cooking
raisin, dried fruit of certain varieties of grapevines bearing grapes with a high content of sugar and solid flesh. Although the fruit is sometimes artificially dehydrated, it is usually sun-dried.
