S Jenna's life starts to change when she finds out she is accepted to Harvard Harvard, town (1990 pop. 12,329), Worcester co., E central Mass.; inc. 1732. A Shaker house and cemetery, a Native American museum, and a Harvard observatory are there. and her boyfriend Scott isn't. Despite being incredibly smart, Jenna spends most of her time with Scott worrying about him leaving her because she isn't good enough for him. She thinks Scott is smarter, better looking, and much more popular, so what is he doing wasting his time with her? The fact that she knows she isn't ready to have sex yet, when that's all Scott thinks about, is at the heart of her worries. As if walking on eggshells with Scott isn't enough, Jenna's best friend Courtney suddenly morphs into someone she can barely recognize. Courtney is having sex, stealing, losing too much weight, and seems to have a big secret with Scott. The story takes a serious turn when Scott puts Rohypnol Ro·hyp·nol A trademark for the drug flunitrazepam. rohypnol Date-rape drug, flunitrazepam Drug abuse A benzodiazepine that is ± 10-fold more potent than Valium Route of administration Oral, pulverized/snorted Effects , the date rape drug date rape drug Public health A popular name for Rohypnol, which is 10-fold more potent than Valium as a sedative hypnotic; its notoriety derives from its alleged ability to ↓ inhibitions and defenses in ♀, helping the female's partner make unwanted sexual advances , into Jenna's drink. Even after all of Courtney's excuses for not telling Jenna about this, one has to wonder if a best friend would really keep something like this to herself. This quick read is a more serious turn for Burnham that may attract some new readers. The novel's focus on date rape drugs and their consequences make this a valuable addition to any collection.
