Monroe Milstein cautioned, however, that October results are not necessarily indicative of sales for the balance of the quarter. He noted that results of the first ten days of November were flat with the previous year. Milstein suggested that if the weather continues cold through the balance of this quarter and the economy does not deteriorate, the second quarter results should be strong. Milstein, however, declined to make any projection for the balance of the quarter. When asked to comment on his statement in the company's annual report that it was the company's goal eventually to reward stockholders with a dividend, Milstein responded that if the second quarter results were strong, he would consider making a recommendation to the board of directors.
