Notes: This amount is calculated by subtracting the following items from gross sales: merchandise returned for credit, allowances for damaged or missing goods, freight for the fourth quarter ended June 1, 2002 were $601.3 million compared with $526.6 million for the comparative thirteen week period ended June 2, 2001, a 14.2% increase. These results reflect a 5.0% comparative store sales increase for the thirteen comparative weeks. Comparative store sales increased 11.2% during March, decreased 3.2% in April and increased 4.8% during May. The decline in April comparative store sales reflects an earlier Easter selling season this year with Easter falling on March 31, 2002 compared with Easter falling on April 15, 2001 a year ago. Net sales for the year ended June 1, 2002 were $2.577 billion compared with $2.400 billion for the comparative fifty-two weeks ended June 2, 2001, a 7.4% increase. The results reflect a 0.3% comparative store sales decrease for the twelve-month period. Comparative store sales for the year were adversely affected by weak outerwear sales due to a warmer than normal winter selling season. During the year ended June 1, 2002 the Company opened 19 Burlington Coat Factory stores and 9 MGM MGM in full Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. U.S. corporation and film studio. It was formed when the film distributor Marcus Loew, who bought Metro Pictures in 1920, merged it with the Goldwyn production company in 1924 and with Louis B. Mayer Pictures in 1925.
