Thornaby Cemetery is flying the flag for the area in the national Cemetery of the Year Awards. Last year - in its first year of entering - the historic cemetery came second in its category in the awards, which aim to discover Britain's best cemeteries, churchyards and crematoria. Burial grounds enter one of five categories depending on their size. They receive an unannounced visit from a panel of judges, who score the site on its merits and pitfalls. Awards administrator Josh Greenberg said: "We have had a record number of entrants this year so the competition should be fierce."
