The attack happened off Broad Park Road, Henley Green, at about 8.30pm on Friday.

Police were only yesterday able to take a full statement from the shocked victim, who is in his 40s.

Det Con Trudi Vickers, from Stoney Stanton Stoney Stanton is a village in the Blaby district of Leicestershire, England, with a population of about 3,500. It constitutes a civil parish. The village is on a rocky outcrop and was the site of a quarry, which was closed in 1958.  Road CID Cid or Cid Campeador (sĭd, Span. thēth kämpāäthōr`) [Span.,=lord conqueror], d. 1099, Spanish soldier and national hero, whose real name was Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. , said the man walked through from the bedroom to find four teenagers in his living room.

She said: "We believe they probably came into the flat to steal, but at the moment the motive for the attack is a bit unclear."

The householder challenged the four and a struggle broke out. One of the men pulled out a white foot-long rounders bat, and another was armed with a wooden truncheon.

Police believe one attacker would have suffered a cut eye after the victim punched him.

But the four then battered their victim around his head and body, leaving him drifting in and out of consciousness on the floor.

They then fled from the flat empty-handed.

Det Con Vickers said the victim had managed to make a phone call to a friend, but had been unable to speak.

The worried friend went round to the flat and found him unconscious.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for three broken ribs and a head injury.
