But in fact, all of the humans in this bleak and haunting fantasy must do what they must do as pre-ordained by the god Odin. Inspired by the Icelandic Saga of Ragnarok--the apocalyptic Battle at the End of the World--Burgess sets his novel so far ahead in the future that man has once again become primitive, a victim of his own technology.
