Burgamy's double gives Ems edge.

The answers were just over three hours in time and 15 in tallies, the last of those driven in on Brian Burgamy's eighth-inning double as Eugene (6-10) posted an 8-7 triumph over Spokane (5-12).

What happened before then? What didn't?

The teams combined for 21 hits, including six doubles and a pinch-hit homer by Spokane's Trey Dyson that knotted the game at 7-7 in the seventh. There were also eight errors, six by the Indians.

The winning pitcher was the best of the seven who appeared in the game, Eugene reliever Darwin Soto (1-0). He spent the start of the week as an emergency fill-in with the AAA AAA: see American Automobile Association.

Imagine that, a three-up, three-down inning ... and back to back.

There wasn't a one-two-three inning until Eugene batted in the bottom of the fifth, and two of the outs in that frame were a line drive backhanded by the right fielder right fielder

Eugene's biggest outburst was the fourth, when the Ems scored four runs on three hits, though only one of the runs was earned due to a pair of Spokane errors.

Payback, there. The Indians tallied twice in the second with the aid of two Eugene errors, both by Ems center fielder Josh Carter. The first was an overrun of a ball on the ground, the second a drop after a dive for a liner to shallow center.

That was a call to challenge the scorer, not that it was the last of those.

And not that Carter didn't offer significant aid to the Eugene cause, driving in the first run for the Ems with a single through the pitcher's legs, and two more with a line single to left in that four-run fourth inning.

Carter, drafted out of Oregon State a year ago, was two-for-five Thursday, with three RBIs. In seven games since being sent down from Ft. Wayne of the Midwest League The Midwest League is a Class A minor league baseball league which operates in the Midwestern United States. History
Six teams – the Belleville Stags, the Centralia Cubs, the Marion Indians, the Mattoon Indians, the Mount Vernon Braves, and the West Frankfort

That's a definite jump from his .221 average with two RBIs in 32 games while he was playing a level up from the Northwest League, though his improved numbers are no shock to Ems manager Jeff Gardner For the baseball player, see .

`Josh said his last few games (at Ft. Wayne) he swung the bat really well,' Gardner said. `I liked Josh a lot last year ... and he's made some adjustments.

`He's an aggressive kid and he competes at the plate. Even last year, when he was hitting .170 (for the Ems), he was competing every at-bat. He's going to go up there every at-bat and compete his hardest.'

Hitting fourth in the lineup, Carter often had runners on to drive around. Leadoff hitter In baseball, a leadoff hitter is a batter who bats first in the lineup. Strategy
Leadoff hitters must possess certain traits to be successful: they must reach base at a proficient rate and be able to steal bases.

Seven of the Ems reached base at least twice, including catcher Josh Ervin, who didn't have a walk or a hit this season until Thursday but had one of each against the Indians.
