Represented by independent agencies, Bunker Hill expects to issue policies that will be effective in early January 2003. The company is headed by John P. Tierney, a well-known industry professional who was named president in April of this year.

Its sister company, Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation, the ninth-largest auto insurer in Massachusetts, has been writing auto insurance in Connecticut since March and recently surpassed the $1 million mark in written premium.
