  • Wayne Allard, a U.S.
celebrated a special delivery. A Sumatran rhinoceros The Sumatran Rhinoceros, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis is the smallest extant rhinoceros species, as well as the one with the most fur, which allows it to survive at very high altitudes in Borneo and Sumatra.  named Emi gave birth to her second baby--a 34 kilogram kilogram, abbr. kg, fundamental unit of mass in the metric system, defined as the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder kept at Sèvres, France, near Paris.  (75 pound) female named Suci (SUE-chee). That made Emi the first of her species to produce more than one baby in captivity.

In the wild, fewer than 300 Sumatran rhinos, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis (dy-SER-oh-RY-nus SUEma-TREN-sis), remain. Poachers (illegal hunters) kill the animals. Plus, humans are destroying their forest habitat (region where an organism lives) in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Rearing captive rhinos--like Suci and her older brother--can keep the endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities. In 1999 the U.S. government, in accordance with the U.S.  (group of organisms in danger of dying out) from disappearing, says Dr. Terri Roth, vice president of animal sciences at the Cincinnati Zoo. "[We wanted] to make sure we had more Sumatran rhinos if we lost the wild population," she says. Suci's birth could also help start other breeding programs. Way to go, rhino!
