Bulldogs surge past Millers in second half.

Byline: Joe Lodle The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - West Albany, which spent almost all of last season ranked No. 1, reached the Class 5A state football championship game last December before losing to Corvallis in triple overtime.

This year the Bulldogs want to complete some unfinished business, and they got off on the right foot on Friday night with a season-opening 35-6 victory over Springfield at Silke Field.

"We used a lot of young kids that hadn't played much, and this game gave them some experience," West Albany coach Randy Nyquist said. "I'm glad that Springfield came out and challenged us, and I'm proud of our kids for handling (that challenge) in the second half."

The Millers spotted West Albany a two-touchdown lead after one quarter and answered with their only score in the second quarter to trail by only 14-6 at halftime.

But the Bulldogs responded with three touchdowns in the third period and held the Springfield ground game to minus-13 yards in the second half.

Sophomore Anthony LaCoste opened the game's scoring with a five-yard run with 8:01 left in the first quarter and Tucker Keuter, who started the first scoring drive with a pass interception, made it 14-0 with a one-yard run five minutes later.

A fumble recovery by Marshall Curry late in the first quarter started the Millers' scoring drive, which ended six plays later when Donavan Ramsdal hauled in a 31-yard scoring pass from Brock brock
