Building the Maori clinical workforce.


One nursing, three medical and one allied health student were the recipients of this year's Pegasus Health Maori clinical workforce scholarships. Bev Fremaux, of Ngati Kahu from the Far North, is a second-year nursing student at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology The Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) is an institute of technology in Christchurch, New Zealand. It provides full- and part-time education leading to certificates, diplomas, applied bachelor's degrees and applied master's degrees in technologies and trades. . She says she is looking forward to being involved with Maori health care providers as part of her clinical practice.

The initiative, now in its fifth year, is designed to build the Maori clinical workforce. It is run as a partnership between the Christchurch-based health provider, Ngai Tahu and He Oranga Pounamu Pounamu (New Zealand greenstone) is a highly prized hard nephrite jade found in New Zealand and parts of Australia. It is composed of chlorite and epidote which makes the stone a mid-to-dark green colour.

Greenstone rocks are generally found in rivers.
. The scholarships are awarded to fourth and fifth-year medical students, second and third-year nursing students and those studying in an allied health area. They consist of a contribution to fees, cultural supervision and tikanga, te Reo Maori training and clinical supervision.

The distinguished winners were Margaret Metherell and Amama Thornley of Christchurch, while Susan Glennie and Waveney Grennell of Christchurch and Janet Larsen of Wellington received meritorious service awards. The awards were presented at the college's annual conference in Christchurch.
