Special programs and classes: Awbrey Park is one of the only elementary schools in the district with an on-staff counselor, who, along with offering individual support, leads social skills and friendship groups and support groups for students experiencing family separations or divorce. The school qualifies for federal Title I funding, earmarked for extra reading, writing and math instruction.

The school has an Effective Behavior Support program to help kids make good decisions, and a Read Naturally Lab - funded through a Eugene Education Fund grant - to help students become more fluent fluent /flu·ent/ (floo´int) flowing effortlessly; said of speech.  readers.

The school offers before- and after-school care for families, as well as supplemental kindergarten. A Technology Club meets once a week after school.

A team from Awbrey Park recently gave a presentation on its special education/regular education "inclusion model" at a Coalition for Essential Schools conference in Cincinnati last fall. Under the model, the general education and special education teams work together in ways to help all students be successful.

Finally, listeners of KRVM radio may be familiar with Awbrey Park fifth-grade radio plays, aired on the station every spring. Teacher Fred Ingman has worked with his classes for the past decade to create half-hour radio dramas that have become a mainstay on the school district-owned station.

Parent involvement: The school has a strong Parent Teacher Association that raises funds for field trips, supplies, technology, assemblies and more.

The school also has monthly Family Nights when parents and students are invited into the computer lab and library to learn together and check out books.

School Report Card rating for 2004 (based on the 2002-03 school year): Exceptional, up from a satisfactory the year before. Hardin gives credit to former principal Laurie Moses as well as the staff. "It's satisfying to get an exceptional rating," she says. "However, it is more important to feel good about all the hard work we do with our students. Our staff knows they work hard and that they help our students learn."

How students fared on the 2003 statewide reading and math tests: In reading, 96 percent of Awbrey Park third-graders and 88 percent of fifth graders hit state benchmarks, compared with statewide averages of 82 percent and 76 percent, respectively.

In math, 83 percent of third-graders and 82 percent of fifth-graders passed, compared with statewide averages of 78 percent and 76 percent, respectively.

Poverty rate, based on the number of students qualifying for free or reduced price meals: 44.3 percent
