has to offer at an event in Coventry next week.

On Wednesday, members of both the Green Lane evening guild and the Finham afternoon guild are inviting women - especially those newly retired - to drop in to St Martin in the Fields Church in Green Lane, Finham, between 2pm and 4pm.

They have chosen a significant date in the guild's history to attract new members.

It was on May 7, 1928, that women in the UK finally won the right to vote ... once they'd reached the age of 21.

Marian Scott, chairman of the Finham guild, said: "Few people realise that the Townswomen's Guild directly followed on from the Suffragists movement - our predecessors didn't chain themselves to railings like the Suffragettes, they were the non-violent wing who demonstrated and worked within the law to win votes for women.

"The TG was formed a year later to help women cope with their hard-won rights."

Personally Marian, aged 77, of Lonscale Avenue, Styvechale Grange, joined her first guild in 1964 because of the friendship and companionship companionship

She feels she's also learned a fair bit over the years from different guest speakers.

Shirley Flanaghan, aged 73, of Gregory Avenue, Green Lane, said: "I know that my grandmother took my dad on Votes For Women demonstrations when he was still in his pram (1) (Phase Change RAM) Pronounced "P-ram. See phase change memory.

"But the time has come for us to try to interest some younger women to join us at afternoon or evening meetings.

"They may be interested in arts, crafts, drama or a variety of other things. We even used to have a very successful choir."

Women of all ages are welcome to find out more about TG groups throughout Coventry and Warwickshire.

If they cannot make the meeting on Wednesday they can find their nearest guild by ringing Marian on 024 7641 2213.
