Building a name in nation's capital.

The Thornton-Tomasetti Group, the New York-based international engineering and design firm, is the structural engineer for the Masonry Variations exhibit at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and the International Masonry Institute, the exhibit, which runs through April 4, features works by four innovative architects that demonstrate the versatility of stone, terrazzo, brick and concrete.

The Thornton-Tomasetti Group worked closely with the four design and construction teams to develop innovative techniques to install the works by: Julie Eizenberg, principal of Koning/Eizenberg Architecture with a team of craftworkers led by Michael Megazzi; Carlos Jimenez, principal of Carlos Jimenez Studio with J. Keith Behrens; Jeanne Gang, principal of Studio Gang Architects with Matt Stokes Redabaugh; and Winka Dubbeldam, principal of Archi-Tectonics with Robert Mion Jr.

"Each installation presented unique challenges relating to the materials used and the complexity of the design, which we tackled by coming up with creative solutions and practices that had never been used before," explains Joseph Burns of The Thornton-Tomasetti Group.
