Building a future for bats.


SPECIAL "flats" for bats have been created in a picturesque historic ruin.

, in the East Allen Valley near Allendale in Northumberland, is a scheduled ancient monument, parts of which date back to the 16th Century. Because it is near a public footpath, it was considered dangerous in its present state.

But after talks with Allendale Estates, and the local farmer, Natural England has stepped in to help save the building, to provide a home for bats.

During repairs, Natural England has put in ledges inside stonework in a bid to create living quarters for crevice crevice /crev·ice/ (krev´is) fissure.

It is hoped that by modifying the structure internally local wildlife will now be able to occupy the chimney as a safe haven for roosting or hibernation.
