Whether you work for an Internet-based business or not, the Internet can serve as a valuable tool for building meaningful realtionships online. What do I mean by this? For instance, let''s take a look at applications such as Twitter. Twitter allows anyone the freedom to join for free and create a personalized page in which you can post a very brief biography of yourself and include a link back to whatever site you choose. The catch is that when you post messages to other people, you only have 140 characters in which to do it, so you''d better make it good.I think the vast majority of the reason why so many people have gone crazy with Twitter fever is due to the fast that there are no frills about it. It''s very simple- so much so that even my grandmother could do it (no offense, grandma!). I''ve met a lot of great people by using Twitter. The main reason why a lot of people use Twitter is to build meaningful relationships with other people. For example, I really enjoy running and athletics/exercise, so as a result, I am constantly keeping an eye out for other like-minded people on Twitter. Together, we trade running stories, exercise advice and other silly things. There are also a great number of people who use Twitter to help market their business. I have mixed feelings about this (as do many other people). For example, I will often get notifications that let me know that someone has decided to follow me on Twitter. As a common courtesy, many people upon receiving this message, will automatically follow a person back without even thinking twice. Not me. Like any friendship, it is always a good idea to evaluate whether or not you want to be friends with someone. How will the relationship affect you? What do you expect to get out of it? That being said, there are a lot people who will simply create a Twitter profile and try to get as many people following them as possible- as if it were a popularity contest. Well, I''ve got news for you. If you join a micro-blogging service like Twitter and don''t contribute to the ongoing conversations, then you aren''t using it for what it''s intended. As a result, you might get a bunch of followers, but how many of those followers will actually yield you business? You also have to be careful, because if you try to follow someone on Twitter but your tweets consist of nothing but blog posts or posts related to marketing your business, then you may get blocked. After you get blocked a certain number of times by people, your account gets suspended and you will eventually get kicked out. Building meaningful relationships is crucial to the success of a business. For example, if one person likes your product or service, then chances are that they''ll spread that message to other people who will then spread the message on to others and so on. This is perhaps the most effective way of driving business is through word-of-mouth. It''s the consumers who now determine how good or bad a business will do.
