This book tells a history of architecture from Jamestown to Post-Modernism. Some chapters with titles such as "Halls of Power," deal with civic buildings. Others, with titles like, "In the Heartland" refer to geographical regions. Still others, such as "The Jazz Age Noun 1. Jazz Age - the 1920s in the United States characterized in the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald as a period of wealth, youthful exuberance, and carefree hedonism " tap into the spirit of the times. Brief information-packed paragraphs and extended captions offer just enough text to place the chosen examples into a historical context. Shemie's precise watercolor images dominate the spreads and help us understand the remarkable diversity of architecture as an art form.
