Building's changing roles over the years; SUCCESSFUL COVENTRY RESTAURANT BOSS PLANS TO TURN LANDMARK BUILDING INTO A HUGE INDIAN AND THAI FOOD EATERIE.

THE old fire station has been empty since 1988, falling into an increasing state of disrepair after being targeted by vandals and arsonists.

In 1902 it was the city's first purpose-built fire station - built four years after the volunteer fire brigade became semi-professional.

 and ambulance service, and the main building was surrounded by small outbuildings and a stable at the back for horses which pulled the steam-powered fire engines.

The old hose tower was hit during air raids during the Second World War and needed restoration, but the fire station was used until 1976, when the new base opened in Radford Road.

In 1988 the city council looked at the possibility of converting the building into a multi-million pound arts and media centre. Breweries can take up multiple city blocks, or be a collection of equipment in a homebrewer's kitchen.  Hardys and Hansons wanted to spend pounds 1.5m turning it into a trendy pub-diner.

The city council put a January deadline on tenders for the building, with high hopes it would become a prominent part of the Phoenix Initiative development.
