NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2003

October is Down Syndrome Down syndrome, congenital disorder characterized by mild to severe mental retardation, slow physical development, and characteristic physical features. Down syndrome affects about 1 in every 730 live births and occurs in all populations equally.  Awareness Month and the Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee “Middle Tennessee” redirects here. This year's walk in Centennial Park on West End Avenue will further the mission of DSAMT and the National Down Syndrome Society by promoting the acceptance and awareness of people with Down syndrome by including them in their communities.

 with Down syndrome," says DSAMT Executive Director Sheila Moore. "It is also our only fundraiser. The funds we raise at this event are used for education, research and advocacy for Down syndrome."

Last year's walk raised $15,000 for DSAMT and included corporate sponsor such as BellSouth Pioneers, Delta Airlines, and Southern Trophy House to mention a few.

Families through out Middle Tennessee have already started collecting donations for the walk. Early registration is $15 per walker while registration the day of the event is $20. Families of children with Down syndrome are encouraged to create a team around their child and get as many walkers as possible. Persons who cannot attend the event can sponsor other walkers.

The event schedule includes registration at 9 a.m., the walk starts at 10:30 and live entertainment and games start at 12 p.m. Participants can bring sack lunches or purchase food at the event. All proceeds from the event go to the DSAMT. For more information or to sponsor a walker call (615) 386-9002.
