Wednesday on a giant mural mural

Painting applied to and made integral with the surface of a wall or ceiling. Its roots can be found in the universal desire that led prehistoric peoples to create cave paintings—the desire to decorate their surroundings and express their ideas and beliefs.
in front of the Community Alliance of Lane County's offices at 458 Blair Blvd.

The mural, entitled "Shoulders to Stand On," will be dedicated at a ceremony at 5 p.m. today, in observance of the social justice agency's 40th anniversary.

The colorful painting shows a glacier glacier, moving mass of ice that survives year to year, formed by the compacting of snow into névé and then into granular ice and set in motion outward and downward by the force of gravity and the stress of its accumulated mass.  cutting through a mountain at sunrise, and several ships being tossed on an ocean at night, their sails bearing the symbols of different world religions.

In the center of the mural, Mother Nature is depicted as a tree, with multiethnic mul·ti·eth·nic

The mural's racially diverse painters were selected by teachers and counselors on the basis of their artistic talent or community activism. With guidance from consulting artist Colleen Williams Colleen Williams is one of the co-anchors of KNBC Channel 4 in Los Angeles along with Paul Moyer, currently serving on the 5 and 11 p.m. weekday broadcasts of The Channel 4 News. She also reports on occasion for NBC News.  of Springfield, they brainstormed ideas last week, sketched out the painting on Friday, and began painting in earnest on Monday.

The mural's ships are intended to represent that virtually all Americans are immigrants, and Mother Nature is presented "as the one who holds up the entire human race," Williams said.

One of the artists, 13-year-old Gina Bauer, called the final product a pleasant surprise.

"Each of us had our own ideas," she said. "I don't think anyone expected it to come out this good. We were all expecting different things."

Bauer can't predict how others will respond to the mural, but its message to her is clear: "It shows we can never stop fighting for justice, day or night," she said. "You always have to keep reaching for greatness."
