FINANCE recruitment specialist Sellick Partnership has advised graduates across Merseyside to brush up to paint, or make clean or bright with a brush; to cleanse or improve; to renew.

Research has shown a good qualification is no longer enough to secure a job in the increasingly competitive graduate job market.

Students graduating this year face disappointing prospects, according to according to

Employers are increasingly looking for candidates with skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills "Interpersonal skills" refers to mental and communicative algorithms applied during social communications and interactions in order to reach certain effects or results. The term "interpersonal skills" is used often in business contexts to refer to the measure of a person's ability  - areas where many graduates fall down.

Beverley Smith-Jagger, director at Sellick Partnership, said: "Although graduates need to possess specialist knowledge of their subject, employers are also looking for individuals who are able to demonstrate additional competencies that are transferable in the given role and aren't necessarily linked to their academic background.

"These competencies can be gained from work experience and unpaid work placements."
