Bruncor launches ImagicTV.

SAINT JOHN, N.B., Canada--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1998--Bruncor Inc. today announced its launch of ImagicTV Inc., a Saint John-based company that has developed the technology to deliver broadcast television services over existing copper telephone wires. This groundbreaking technology is being unveiled in Atlanta at SUPERCOMM '98, the world's largest annual communications conference and exhibition.

"Our investment in ImagicTV will enable us to expand our VideoActive(TM) network throughout the province by adding broadband capability to regular phone lines," said Peter Jollymore, vice president of planning and marketing for Bruncor and chairman of ImagicTV. "It is further proof of our commitment to bringing more high-speed, multimedia services to every New Brunswicker. ImagicTV has developed another first-in-the-world innovation, right here in New Brunswick, that holds the best potential we've seen yet for a broadcast TV solution over copper wire."

ImagicTV's "telco-ready" software will enable telecommunications companies worldwide to deliver broadcast TV to residential customers, turning traditional copper telephone wire into high-speed Internet Protocol (IP) networks like NBTel's VideoActive network. This solution is designed to integrate into any telco's existing infrastructure.

"The power of our product is that it combines the capabilities of TV viewing and the Internet on a single appliance - all delivered over existing copper phone wire," said Marcel LeBrun, president and CEO of ImagicTV. "Never before could this unique and complete service package be offered to residential customers in this way."

ImagicTV's solution combines quick access to Internet services, including Web surfing and e-mail, with broadcast TV and enhanced features such as instant "click and view" and pay-per-view programming. New Brunswickers who choose NBTel's broadcast TV service, which NBTel hopes to begin offering early in 1999, would receive an extensive channel selection - all delivered in digital-quality picture and sound.

Since the software operates over a two-way network, self-serve options will be a fundamental part of the offering. Customers will be able to add or change their channel line-up instantly - at their convenience - eliminating the need for installer visits. The ImagicTV solution also includes a personalized program guide that will provide families with useful information on programming and content.

If a customer were to see a pay-per-view program of interest, for example, it could be ordered instantly and even paid for on-line all from the comfort of home. Or, if viewers wanted to watch a particular program on a channel that was not part of their current service package, they could select that program and it would be activated instantly. Parents will also be able to block specific programming at their discretion.

Getting started will be simple. All that customers will need is an easy-to-use set-top box. If there were a PC (personal computer) in the home, ImagicTV's software could run on that as well.

ImagicTV is part of NBTel's LivingLAB(TM) Innovations Environment, a unique partnership among NBTel, leading-edge communications companies and New Brunswickers. Here, world-first products and services are researched, created and brought to market.

"The LivingLAB is a never-ending learning centre - a live-market sounding board where we focus on using technology and on how to make it fit lifestyles," said Jollymore. "We build on this learning to deliver both innovation and choice to New Brunswick, the rest of Canada and, ultimately, the world. And, in the process, we help bring new jobs and investment to New Brunswick."

ImagicTV has offices in Saint John and Fredericton (New Brunswick, Canada). It is an affiliate of both NBTel and Newbridge Networks.
