Brum bullies.

Byline: Roz Laws

IN A Birmingham graveyard, a bullied school pupil rises from the dead to take his very gruesome revenge on his tormentors.

Watch out for decapitations, detached eyeballs, a fence post through the head, bleeding ears and hands chopped off.

Welcome to the latest film to be made in Brum - a gory go·ry

teenage slasher flick, very violent for its certificate but, in places, quite entertaining.

Filmed at Bishop Vesey and Streetly schools in Sutton Coldfield Sutton Coldfield, city (1991 pop. 102,572), Birmingham metropolitan district, central England. The city is a residential suburb of Birmingham with a metal products industry and a large television transmitting station. , the movie opens at St Peter's Church in Harborne, at the funeral of Darren Mullet (Calvin Dean).

Prim head girl Justine (Tuppence Middleton) gives a eulogy at his funeral but is forced to admit she never even noticed him.

She gets to let down her knee-high white socks when she's asked out by Alexis (Dimitri Leonidas). Tormented has an important issue at its heart, that victims of cyber bullying can't even escape at home because of texting, email and internet. Unfortunately any serious theme is soon forgotten as increasingly illogical plot descends into a blood bath.

What starts creatively and wittily becomes ridiculous, not to mention physically impossible. By the end it all makes very little sense.

Despite its flaws, Tormented is far more watchable than this other release about violent youngsters, Awaydays. It's filmed better, has some pretty good performances and natural dialogue.

But it does suffer by comparison in one aspect.

It's very clear thatAwaydays is filmed on theWirral, with plenty of shots of the sea and docks.

But Tormented, partly funded by Screen West Midlands, isn't a advert for Birmingham. It's a missed opportunity to promote city - you'd never know, unless you knew the locationswell, that was made in Brum. And that's a shame..
