Brum behind in engineering.

A NEW survey by the Society of Operations Engineers, and its professional sector the Institute of Road Transport Engineers, indicates that Bristol is the leading engineering city in the UK.

Surprisingly the Midlands' main conurbation, and the nation's second city, Birmingham did not make the top five - coming in only at number nine.

Given the region's heritage for engineering and the strong presence of the vehicle industry in the area this was the survey's most surprising result.

"Engineers play a great role in our society and, through membership, we're continually helping them reach a level of professional recognition and development," said Andrea Dick, communications and marketing manager at the SOE.

"It's great to see a wide-spread of engineering expertise across the country but, as a Midlander, I must admit that I was a little surprised to see Birmingham that far down the chart. I'm sure, however, it's something we can address - especially as the Midlands has such a strong heritage in the field. It may be that engineers have entered into other areas - taking those much valued skills out of the labour market - and that they have yet to be replaced by the next group of young graduates."

The SOE will be in Birmingham, at the NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
, from April 24-26 for the Commercial Vehicle Show so any engineers in the region who are looking to become members of the SOE and IRTE IRTE Institute of Road Transport Engineers  should head to Hall 5 and stand 5731 where the IRTE's staff will be on hand to help that person develop their engineering career.
