ionization (MALDI MALDI Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization ). The CombiSource is an integrated, computer-switchable ion source for the APEX(R) IV series of Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometers (FTMS).

Today's life science applications increasingly require easy-to-use high-performance and high-throughput mass spectrometry systems. In proteomics in particular, ESI and MALDI are regarded as the key complementary ionization techniques of choice. To date, however, the switch between MALDI and ESI sources in FTMS has required either the exchange of source hardware, or even the swap of entire FTMS vacuum carts containing the different sources. To address this issue, Bruker Daltonics has developed the first fully-automated combined ESI and MALDI source for the APEX(R) IV series (patents pending).

This integrated approach to a dual ionization source allows automated unattended switching between ESI and MALDI in FTMS in less than 60 seconds. The CombiSource combines our MTP(TM) MALDI source, that has been developed originally for the FLEX(TM) series of MALDI-TOF MALDI-TOF Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization - Time of Flight  mass spectrometers, with our high-performance Apollo(TM) ESI source. In the MALDI-mode of operation, analyte ions are desorbed from a 96- or 384-spot microtitre-plate AnchorChip(TM) target, and are then immediately thermalized to enhance FTMS sensitivity and resolution.
