At the NYSSA event, Balekdjian will discuss Outcomes-Based Access, an aggressive and comprehensive new effort by managed care organizations to control drug costs resulting in the rejection of 40% of new drugs submitted for formulary formulary /for·mu·lary/ (for´mu-lar?e) a collection of recipes, formulas, and prescriptions.

approval. Under Outcomes-Based Access, managed care organizations are restricting preferential formulary inclusion to only those new drug products that can unambiguously demonstrate a compelling value proposition through complex pharmacoeconomic models. The value proposition must show how new drug treatments produce equal or better patient outcomes (medical results) than current treatments while at the same time lowering overall treatment costs. Drugs rejected for formulary inclusion are available to patients, if at all, on a strictly limited basis or if the patient pays the full retail cost of the drug.

"Collectively, these changes are already impacting pharmaceutical industry revenues and profitability and forcing drug companies to fundamentally change how they do business," said Balekdjian. "As a result of Outcomes-Based Access, managed care organizations are rejecting an average of 40% of new drugs submitted for formulary approval, increasing restrictions on physician prescribing practices, limiting drug companies' ability to market to physicians, and working to reduce patient demand for expensive branded drug products."

NYSSA's program will provide investment professionals and practitioners in the pharmaceutical, biotech, managed care, and related industries with a unique opportunity to network with their counterparts in the healthcare industry and to leave with an action plan for creating effective drug development and investment strategies. The program is supported, in part, by Pharmaceutical Executive magazine.
