Summary: Gordon Gordon, river in W Tasmania, Australia, 125 mi (200 km) long. Flowing from mountains to the W coast, its main tributaries are the Franklin and Denison from the N, and Serpentine and Olga to the S.  Brown has said Britain Britain (brĭt`ən), alternate term for Great Britain, comprised of England, Scotland, and Wales. Often used synonymously with the United Kingdom, the name Britain is derived from Britannia,  will remain a powerful voice in Brussels after Baroness Ashton was appointed as the EU's foreign minister.

Gordon Brown has insisted that Britain will remain a powerful voice in Brussels after Labour peer Baroness Ashton was appointed as the European Union's first foreign minister.

She was the surprise choice of the 27 EU heads of government after Tony Blair's candidacy for the European Council presidency was quashed.

Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy Herman A. Van Rompuy (born October 31, 1947 in Etterbeek) is a Flemish politician and member of the CD&V (formerly called CVP). He was the Vice President of the CVP Youth from 1973 to 1975, from 1978 onward, he was a member of the National Bureau of the CVP, from 1975 to 1980 he  was named as Europe's first President, with Baroness Ashton of Upholland as High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy.

Mr Brown, who had lobbied for his predecessor, Mr Blair, to get the top job, said Mr van Rompuy had a reputation for "integrity and resolve" and the necessary qualities as a diplomat, statesman and negotiator.

The Prime Minister said he still felt that Mr Blair would have been "excellent" for the job, but said it had become clear that the European centre-right parties wanted one of their own members as President.

He added that Baroness Ashton, who will also be vice-president of the European Commission, would maintain the UK's role in the EU.

The appointment means, however, that Britain has surrendered its influence over trade affairs - Baroness Ashton is currently EU Trade Commissioner.
