Brown vows to stay friendly with the US.


GORDON Gordon, river in W Tasmania, Australia, 125 mi (200 km) long. Flowing from mountains to the W coast, its main tributaries are the Franklin and Denison from the N, and Serpentine and Olga to the S.  BROWN will pledge to maintain the UK alliance with the US when he visits George Bush this week.

The PM appeared to be distancing himself from America by visiting Germany and France before his US trip.

But yesterday, he insisted the two countries would continue to work together to "meet many of the great challenges we face". He added: "It is in the British national interest that the relationship with the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  is our most important bilateral bilateral /bi·lat·er·al/ (-lat´er-al) having two sides, or pertaining to both sides.

But critics of the war - many in his own party - would like to see a chilling of relations between London and Washington.
