GORDON Gordon, river in W Tasmania, Australia, 125 mi (200 km) long. Flowing from mountains to the W coast, its main tributaries are the Franklin and Denison from the N, and Serpentine and Olga to the S.  Brown last night delivered a stinging criticism of European economic policy.

He said it was "not just out of date but counter-productive" - and warned it could lead to massive unemployment.

 was attending an EU summit in Brussels - he said Europe needed to do more to compete with America and the Far East.

He called on the EU to throw out a federal tax policy, speed up economic reform, and be more flexible in the labour market.

"Only by responding to globalisation can we create a prosperous Europe," he said.
