Brotmans Selected to Receive 2005 Seattle First Citizen Award.


SEATTLE -- Jeffrey and Susan Brotman have been selected as the 2005 Seattle First Citizens for their outstanding support of numerous local civic and cultural organizations.

Jeffrey Brotman is the chairman of Costco Wholesale Corp., based in Issaquah. His wife, Susan, has served in leadership positions on several nonprofit boards. The Brotmans will be recipients of the 67th annual Seattle First Citizen Award at a banquet May 18 at the Westin Seattle.

The award was created by the Seattle-King County Association of realtors in 1939 to annually honor the icons of philanthropy and community involvement. Puget Sound Puget Sound (py`jĕt), arm of the Pacific Ocean, NW Wash., connected with the Pacific by Juan de Fuca Strait, entered through the Admiralty Inlet and extending in two arms c.  Business Journal has been a co-presenter of the award since 1997.

The Brotmans' commitment to public service spans many years and numerous local organizations. Just a few of their most notable contributions:

--The couple's major gift for the construction of Marion Oliver McCaw Hall The Marion Oliver McCaw Hall is a performance hall and opera house located in Seattle, Washington. Inaugurated in June 2003, it was constructed within the basic steel support structure of the earlier Seattle Opera House, originally created for the Worlds Fair in 1962 and gutted  in Seattle Center Seattle Center is a fairground, park and arts and entertainment center in Seattle, Washington. The 74-acre campus is the site used in 1962 by the Century 21 Exposition. It is located just north of Belltown in Lower Queen Anne.

--The couple's major lead off gift for the University of Washington's new South Lake Union Medical Campus.

--Both have been active with the University of Washington, establishing two annual awards, the Brotman Diversity Award and the Brotman Award for Instructional Excellence. Jeffrey Brotman is the current president of the UW Board of Regents An independent governing body that oversees a state's public Colleges and Universities.

 while Susan Brotman serves on the UW Foundation board.

--Jeffrey Brotman serves as chair of the Million Dollar Roundtable for United Way of King County and also headed the group's 1997 fundraising campaign.

--Susan Brotman serves as board president for Seattle Art Museum The Seattle Art Museum (commonly known as "SAM") is an art museum located in downtown Seattle, Washington USA. Admission is free on the first Thursday of each month.  and as board chair for Pacific Northwest Ballet The Pacific Northwest Ballet is a ballet company and based in Seattle, Washington in the United States. Founded in 1972 as part of the Seattle Opera and named the Pacific Northwest Dance Association, it broke away from the Opera in 1977 and took its current name in 1978.  Foundation. The announcement of the Brotmans' selection was made jointly by co-chairs, Puget Sound Business Journal publisher Mike Flynn and Roni Strupat, the Realtor association representative.

Jeffrey Brotman co-founded Costco with company president and chief executive officer Jim Sinegal in 1982. The company merged with competitor Price Co., operator of Price Club, in 1992 to become PriceCostco, later renamed Costco Wholesale Corp. Today, Costco has grown to 450 warehouse stores around the globe and is one of the country's largest retailers.
