BRIDGEWATER, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1999--Brother International Corporation today introduced a pair of ultra-light, ultra-portable color printers A printer that prints in color using three (CMY) or four (CMYK) colors of ink, toner or dye. Four color ribbons have been used in dot matrix printers, but these are rare today. See color laser printer and printer.  specifically designed for mobile professionals using laptop computers.

Its new MP-21C and MP-21Cdx Mobile Color Printers - incorporating piezo "Piezo", derived from the Greek piezein, which means to squeeze or press, is a prefix used in:

"The MP-21C and MP-21Cdx are really a 'road warriors' dream come true. At about 2.2 pounds and small enough to fit in a briefcase In Windows 95/98, a system folder used for synchronizing files between two computers, typically a desktop and laptop computer. Files to be worked on are placed into a Briefcase, which is then transferred to the second machine via floppy, cable or network.  or laptop case - with no need for an external power supply - they can produce superior color output, anytime, anywhere," said Jeff Sandler, Senior Product Manager for Color Printers.

The MP-21C will begin shipping in mid-April and features a convenient PCMCIA interface that delivers both power and data to the printer. It is also the first piezo electric based mobile color inkjet printer A printer that propels droplets of ink directly onto the medium. Today, almost all inkjet printers produce color. Low-end inkjets use three ink colors (cyan, magenta and yellow), but produce a composite black that is often muddy. . The estimated street price for the MP-21C is $299. The estimated street price for the MP-21Cdx is $349.

Exclusive PCMCIA Power/Data Interface

Brother's exclusive PCMCIA interface enhances flexibility and solves a number of challenges faced by mobile laptop users who want to print while on the go.

"The MP-21C delivers the best of all possible worlds The phrase "the best of all possible worlds" (French: le meilleur des mondes possibles) was coined by the German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz in his 1710 work Essais de Théodicée sur la bonté de Dieu, la liberté de l'homme et l'origine du mal (Theodicy). : extraordinary color output from printers that leverage the user's laptop and minimize the extra items they need to carry along," said Sandler. "These features combine to provide the mobile professional an easy-to-use solution for printing high quality color output wherever they might be."

Photo-Quality Output using Piezo Technology

The MP-21C offers dazzling, photo quality color output at up to 720x720 resolution. Utilizing piezo electric technology, the MP-21C is capable of generating the highest quality output of any printer currently in the mobile printer category.

"For the business person, this can mean the difference between success and failure if a proposal or winning idea doesn't look its best" states Sandler. "For the business traveler or professional on the go, there isn't always time to find the local 'branch office' to make last-minute updates to their materials. With the MP-21C and their laptop, they can produce high quality documents, reports, sales proposals and even overhead transparencies whenever and wherever they need to."

An additional benefit to using piezo electric technology in the MP-21C is that it consumes almost 90% less power than competitive models while printing. Its miserly mi·ser·ly

The MP-21C also accommodates a wide variety of paper sizes including letter, legal, A4, A5, B5, executive and also supports paper stocks including plain, coated, and photographic, as well as transparencies and envelopes.

Smallest Footprint and Quietest Operation

Another important feature that makes the MP-21C a practical companion to the professional traveler or to the space-constrained desktop user is its small footprint and form-factor [2.0" D x 11.81" W x 4.17" H]. The MP-21C's base is smaller while printing than comparable mobile models. This small footprint is a result of the unit's vertical orientation Vertical orientation is a 3:4 aspect ratio, rotated 90 degrees from a NTSC television's standard 4:3 aspect ratio. It has been used primarily for arcade games (especially during the early 1980s) and for art projects, including a music video by The Shamen.  while printing - a design feature unique to the MP-21C.

The MP-21C also has a straight through paper path that allows it to accommodate papers from 16-28 lb. This feature, along with its piezo electric technology and virtually silent paper handling enables the MP-21C to print at a whisper - 40dBA - making it the quietest printer in its class.

Additional User Benefits

Other key benefits of the MP-21C are ease of use oriented. Prominent among these is the ease of setting up and installing the MP-21C's PCMCIA connection. Another key benefit is the ease of changing ink supplies. Finally, the MP-21C has an optional fold-up, detachable de·tach
