Most of them drown, and the survivor, Sally, perhaps never really survives. Many years later, Sally's teenage daughter Odella, the oldest of three daughters, tries to take Sally's place when Sally deserts the family to go to Iceland with her lover. The truth about Odella's father is a secret that must come out, especially when Odella chooses to live in Mistik Lake in the summer before university, to be near her young lover Jimmy. Family secrets prevail, with Great-Aunt Gloria hovering in the background, hiding secrets of her own and holding onto Sally's secrets.
