Brooklyn celebrates as Trader Joe's announces opening.


Trader Joe's Trader Joe's is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores headquartered in Monrovia, California. As of September 2007, Trader Joe's has a total of 284 stores.[1]  is to open its first location in Brooklyn in 2008, it was announced this week.

  • Atlantic Avenue (Atlantic City) in New Jersey, used in the Monopoly game
 and Court Street. Trader Joe's will bring more customers to Downtown Brooklyn, and residents will have even more choices when it comes to shopping for fresh produce, prepared foods and groceries--how sweet it is!"

Trader Joe's will be located at 130 Court Street, at the intersection of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue, an area at the crossroads of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill Boerum Hill and Downtown Brooklyn.

The building was built in 1923 and, until now, has served as a bank building, first as headquarters for the Independence Community Bank and, most recently, as a branch of the Sovereign Bank. Sovereign Bank will be relocating across the street to 215 Atlantic Avenue.

The owner of 130 Court Street is Two Trees Management. "We're delighted to assist Marty Markowitz in realizing his long-time dream of bringing Trader Joe's to Brooklyn," said Jed Walentas, a principal of Two Trees.

"Trader Joe's is a great organization and the store will be a wonderful asset to the borough. This will be a great amenity for all of Brooklyn--one that the borough deserves."

Trader Joe's is a chain of neighborhood grocery stores featuring high quality imported and domestic foods and beverages at honest, low prices.

Trader Joe's began in 1958 in the Los Angeles area. Since then, Trader Joe's has expanded to more than 275 stores in 23 states.
