Brooklyn Library breaks ground on $16m plaza.


Brooklyn Public Library Coordinates:  The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), is the public library system of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. It is the fifth largest public library system in the United States.  broke ground this week for a $16.5 million major renovation of its Central Library outdoor Plaza and new state-of-the-art Auditorium that will revitalize Grand Army Plaza
Grand Army Plaza is also the name of a plaza at the intersection of 59th Street and 5th Avenue in front of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, and opposite the southeastermost corner of Central Park.

The 16,000 s/f renovated Plaza will become an extension of the Library with an open-air stage for cultural programming and fully accessible outdoor reading room.

The Plaza features will include: new granite steps, cafe, information kiosks, landscaped gardens, channel of running water, enhanced lighting, and wireless Internet access See how to access the Internet. . The 200-seat Auditorium, located beneath the Plaza, will feature an upper and lower lobby area, two gallery spaces for exhibitions, meeting rooms for performance and educational programs, and digital transmission and wireless technology capabilities.

The renovation of the Plaza & Auditorium represents the Library's most significant fundraising effort to date. The project features an inviting, attractive design by the award-winning firm, Vincent Benic Architect, and is slated for completion in fall 2006.
