Brookhaven National Laboratory Deploys SEPATON Virtual Tape Library System.

SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- SEPATON Product Roadmap And 'Out-Of-The-Box' Appliance-Based Approach Bested the Competition

SEPATON, Inc., the emerging leader in non-disruptive, high-performance data protection appliances, today announced that Brookhaven National Laboratory has purchased the SEPATON S2100-ES Virtual Tape Library (VTL) system to meet its data protection requirements. Brookhaven has initially deployed the system to back-up and recover administrative data and will expand its implementation to include the protection of mission-critical scientific data.

Established in 1947, Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries associated with the Lab. Its role for the DOE is to produce excellent science and advanced technology with the cooperation, support, and appropriate involvement of scientific and local communities. To support these efforts, the Lab currently manages nearly 4 TB of administrative data including payroll, purchasing records, email servers, administrative databases, users home directories, and more. Performing weekly full back-ups of users' home directories was taking over 12 hours and file recovery time was very cumbersome. Brookhaven needed a more efficient solution that would scale to support administrative and scientific data requirements over-time and offered a path to new advanced data protection technologies.

"The appliance-based approach meant the system was up and running in an hour. Everything we needed to perform back-up and recovery of data was in the box ready to work with our software. Second, the SEPATON software roadmap goes beyond just VTL. Its software includes new applications that promise to dramatically improve and simplify data protection."

The S2100-ES has enabled Brookhaven to reduce its back-up window by 40 percent and increase file recovery time dramatically. Prior to SEPATON, a full back-up of users' home directories took over 12 hours to complete. Today, it is completed in less than seven hours. To retrieve files, the Lab can instantaneously query the S2100. There is no time wasted physically moving tapes so files are retrieved in a matter of minutes versus an hour. Ferguson said, "So far, we have been unable to move enough data to the SEPATON appliance to make it break a sweat. We use EMC's Legato software for back-up and we were impressed with how easily the S2100 adapted to our SAN Fibre Channel environment. It truly was 'plug-and-play."
