a recent report issued by Wertheim Schroder & Co., a New York-based brokerage house.

Wertheim Schroder has added the $3.68 billion-in-revenues NME -- which owns and operates hospitals, rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy.  and psychiatric centers -- to its recommended list.

In recent years, NME has increased its exposure to the psychiatric and rehabilitation sectors of the health care industry, while spinning off its Hillhaven nursing home subsidiary, said Wertheim Schroder.

These actions have reduced NME's dependence on federal dollars, while diversifying sources of income. "NME's diversified operating base, combined with the recession-resistant characteristics of health care services, should minimize NME's earnings sensitivity to economy cyclicality," said Wertheim Schroder.

The brokerage estimated that NME's earnings would grow in the next fiscal year to nearly $359 million, or $3.50 a share, from about $380 million, or $3.10 a share, this fiscal year.
