Broin Companies, Sioux Falls Sioux Falls, city (1990 pop. 100,814), seat of Minnehaha co., SE S.Dak., on the Big Sioux River; settled 1856, inc. as a village 1877, as a city 1883. Settlers abandoned the site in 1862 because of Native American raids, but with the establishment (1865) of Fort Dakota it was resettled., SD, the second largest producer of ethanol in the country, announces its Frontier Ethanol plant opening near Gowrie, IA, is the 100th ethanol plant to begin operations in the United States.

Also in the renewable fuels sector, after only one week of fundraising, Iowa Renewable Energy raised over $19.5 million from investors to build a 30 million gallon-per-year biodiesel production facility near Washington, IA.
