The brochure is part of a campaign to educate U.S. employers about addiction addiction: see drug addiction and drug abuse. and change the way they view and treat addicted workers. Hazelden launched the campaign, "Making Recovery America's Business," in response to a survey of 200 human resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees. professionals conducted in October 2003. The survey found that about one in four HR specialists think their companies would be less likely to hire a job candidate if the person is in recovery from alcohol of drug addiction, yet nine in ten believe treatment is effective at helping combat addiction. The survey also found that-- * More than 90 percent of HR professionals believe employees at their companies have easy of very easy access to addiction treatment, but nearly 40 percent say none of their employees has ever sought such treatment; and * More than 80 percent would recommend treatment for an addicted executive of rank-and-file worker, yet 25 percent say their companies believe it is easier in the long run to tire an addicted worker rather than help him/her get treatment. The brochure, "12 Steps Every Company Can Take to Deal With Addicted Employees," includes the following recommendations: * Candidly can·did adj. 1. Free from prejudice; impartial. 2. Characterized by openness and sincerity of expression; unreservedly straightforward: In private, I gave them my candid opinion. assess your company's beliefs about addiction among your employees; * Recognize the extent of addiction in your workplace; * Create a company culture that supports treatment and recovery; * Inform employees how they can help addicted co-workers; and * Hire candidates who have sought treatment for addiction and are in recovery.
