Broadwing Communications Launches Managed Security Suite; Flexible Suite of Services Designed to Combat IT Security Threats.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Broadwing Communications, LLC, a consolidated subsidiary of Broadwing Corporation (NASDAQ: BWNG), has launched a Managed Security Suite of services designed to help thwart IT security threats ranging from malicious access to corporate systems to email-based threats such as SPAM and viruses. Customizable for enterprise sites ranging from a branch office to a Fortune 100 headquarters location, the product suite combines both premises-based and network-based approaches to identify and eliminate security threats where they are most effectively defeated.

The Managed IP Security Suite of products includes:

Managed Premises-based Security Services. Broadwing's Managed Premises-based Security Services assist enterprises with preventing, detecting and mitigating attacks against their networks and IT assets. It includes firewall monitoring and management, intrusion detection and prevention, vulnerability management, security consulting, and security education.

SPAM and Virus Protection Service. Broadwing's SPAM and Virus Protection Service prevents known and unknown viruses from reaching a company's network and provides a solution for eliminating unsolicited bulk e-mail. The service architecture is comprised of a four-pronged approach including: anti-virus, anti-SPAM, image control and content control.

Denial of Service. Broadwing has deployed Denial of Service (DoS) detection infrastructure and integrated it with Broadwing's network management systems. Broadwing will be developing notification and enhanced mitigation services that leverage this DoS detection infrastructure to stop attacks in the Internet "cloud" before they threaten the customer's network.

Broadwing's announcement of this product suite coincides with the growing need for information technology (IT) departments to deliver new applications while grappling with constrained budgets, regulatory compliance issues (i.e., Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA), and increased security threats.

The 2004 E-Crime Watch survey, conducted among security and law enforcement executives by CSO magazine in cooperation with the United States Secret Service and the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute's CERT(R) Coordination Center, shows a significant number of organizations reporting an increase in electronic crimes (e-crimes) and network, system or data intrusions. Forty-three percent (43%) of respondents report an increase in e-crimes and intrusions versus the previous year and 70% report at least one e-crime or intrusion was committed against their organization.
