), predicted an acceleration in the creation of next generation data and Internet service offerings during remarks delivered to a packed audience of customers, analysts, and media at SUPERCOMM, one of the industry's leading technology conferences.

At a media event, Ellenberger and Dr. David Huber, founder, president and CEO of Corvis Corp (Nasdaq:CORV), discussed the new services, business models, and first-to-market advantages made possible by Broadwing's completion of the world's first intelligent, all-optical switched network.

"Customers are recognizing that the next generation of data and Internet services that will give them a competitive advantage in their markets, will not come from the traditional, big, slow providers, but instead from market attackers, like Broadwing, who are using innovative technologies to create new markets and powerful new applications," said Ellenberger.

Ellenberger discussed the tipping point The point in time in which a technology, procedure, service or philosophy has reached critical mass and becomes mainstream. See network effect. See also tip and ring.  within the communications industry communications industry, broadly defined, the business of conveying information. Although communication by means of symbols and gestures dates to the beginning of human history, the term generally refers to mass communications.  created by Broadwing's all-optical network A communications network that works completely in the optical domain. It uses optical switches connected by optical fibers. See optical switch and optical computer.  and the new services it can now offer its customers, such as Optical Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  service and Optical Media Centers.

"The advantage of an all-optical switched network is not just that it can carry data, Internet, and voice traffic faster and more efficiently than any other network today, but that it enables customers to use multimedia and content-rich applications as vital business drivers," explained Ellenberger. "Make no mistake about it, the next Internet frontier will be populated by full-motion video Video transmission that changes the image 30 frames per second (30 fps). Motion pictures are run at 24 fps, which is the minimum frequency required to eliminate the perception of moving frames and make the images appear visually fluid to the eye. , CD-quality audio, 3-dimensional imaging, and other content-rich applications. As other providers follow Broadwing's lead and deploy intelligent, all-optical switched networks and extend the power of lightwave services closer to customers, this trend will only accelerate."

"We built our all-optical network knowing that companies would want the freedom to demand bandwidth on a just-in-time-basis. And today's reality is, only a very few carriers, like Broadwing, now have the networks, capacity and systems for delivering bandwidth where, and more importantly, when customers want it," Ellenberger explained.

"All-optical technology is enabling providers like Broadwing to alter their business models by offering unprecedented services and provisioning capabilities to their customers. By deploying the industry's first all-optical network, Broadwing is driving the industry toward an entirely new level of service," said Huber.
