AARO also deployed videoconferencing technology for the first time in Stroud, using equipment provided by Polycom, Inc. AARO is redistributing a 3 MBps Internet connection throughout the rural community of 2,600 via a network of high-speed antennas. The connection will initially serve City Hall, the police and fire departments, local ambulance service, and the offices of the Sac and Fox Sac and Fox, closely related Native Americans of the Algonquian branch of the Algonquian-Wakashan linguistic stock (see Native American languages). The hospital is connected to the police department; the police department is connected to the fire department and so on. In large communities, these connections are easily made. However, many smaller communities lack the budgets to run expensive copper or fiber optic connections between the various organizations. That is why we are here today," Baker said. According to AARO executives, the company made the equivalent of eight miles of wired connections with less than $50,000 of equipment. According to AARO Chief Technology Officer Mike Erhart, running fiber optic cables in the same area would cost approximately $30,000 to $40,000 per mile. The "Wireless Village" Project kickoff included a demonstration of AARO's new world services, including videoconferencing and VoIP (voice telephony). Additionally, AARO installed and demonstrated an Internet camera on Stroud's main street. Baker said control of the camera will be handed over to the Stroud Police Department for monitoring activity in downtown Stroud. Attending today's kickoff with Lt. Governor Fallin were State Senator Kelly Haney, as well as representatives from the offices of U.S. Sens. Don Nickles and Jim Inhofe, Rep. Wes Watkins, Stroud City Government, the Sac and Fox Tribe, the Oklahoma Municipal League, the Oklahoma State Chamber, WorldCom, Inc., Polycom, Inc., and Cisco Systems, Inc. AARO began offering wireless connectivity in the Oklahoma City metro area in May 2000.
