Hutchison Essar has a subscriber base of 500,000. Aggressive marketing of its cellular brand has resulted in 100 percent annual growth since 1999 and Hutchison Essar was looking for a technology solution that would support this level of growth while keeping service and support costs in check. The company's goal was to consolidate disparate web sites into a centralized employee portal that would provide one-stop access to information, tools and business processes; and a sales portal that would provide its customer base with self-service access to information, services and targeted incentives.

"Time-to-deploy the application and ease-of-use were among the success factors that drove our selection of BroadVision," said Arvind Pandey, vice president of information services, Hutchison Essar. "BroadVision's market-leading personalization and self-service capabilities were also key differentiators."

With support from BroadVision's Global Services team, Hutchison Essar was able to deploy the new portals in three months and is already achieving significant business value. Hutch projects that one-fourth of its customers will use web support instead of phone support, reducing call center costs by 25 percent.

Hutch's B2E portal (Business To Employee portal) A company intranet that is customized for each employee. It includes company-specific information and personalized data such as personal hyperlinks, stock quotes, sports scores and news clips. It could even include a video feed to their children's day care center. It is both an evolution of the intranet and a philosophical statement that acknowledges the reality of the relationship between company and employee. provides self-service access to HR records and forms and makes it easy for a distributed team of content providers to post and edit content on the site and for project teams and communities of interest to share information and participate in online discussions. The B2C portal allows customers to view billing records online and to take advantage of value-add features such as group messaging, e-bill alerts and text-to-speech conversion of e-mails. It also provides personalized incentives and targeted promotions, resulting in incremental revenue for the company.

"BroadVision's enterprise business portal applications give Hutch the competitive edge -- enabling them to provide a level of service and support that differentiates them from other providers in the region," said Sanjay Gupta, senior vice president of marketing and alliances, BroadVision. "While customers and employees enjoy the convenience of the new portals, the company benefits from having a cost-effective solution that will scale to meet the needs of their growing customer base. We look forward to driving significant enterprise-wide business value for Hutch."
