System as part of a broadband network trial.

The FLX solution to be evaluated by CSELT brings together high speed fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber , software and silicon chips designed to create a robust digital data pathway to the home. FLX is the only deployed system with a fiber-rich, switched digital broadband architecture and the services-independent capabilities of ATM switching and transport. The FLX platform currently provides 52 Mbps of dedicated downstream and 1.6 Mbps of dedicated upstream bandwidth.

BroadBand Technologies' FLX System will enable Telecom Italia and CSELT to evaluate end to end ATM services, including Internet access See how to access the Internet.  and user interfaces, integrated with traditional telephony. This is part of the overall process of evaluating various approaches to upgrade the Telecom Italia network in order to determine the feasibility of integrating all required services onto one full service network.

Commented Kris Nasta, BroadBand Technologies Vice President of European Operations, "We believe our FLX System will allow Telecom Italia and CSELT to fully appreciate the performance and cost advantages of end to end ATM services with the ability to use either coaxial cable or twisted pair copper wire for the final drop from the curb to building. The providing of high speed Internet access is a particularly important aspect of the system evaluation."
