Prototype Foreshadows Major Network Development

It is anticipated that successful prototype and subsequent field trials will be a milestone toward ACTEW's intent to develop a fully configured, fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC (Fiber To The Curb) The installation of optical fiber to within several hundred feet of the home or office. At that point, the optics are converted into electronics for delivery into the premises, typically using DSL. ) broadband network that is scheduled to serve 120,000 homes, businesses and government departments.

said, "The proposed network will be a unique switched digital broadband model contributing towards Canberra's reputation as a high technology city. It should attract high tech business to the city and encourage electronic service providers to trial new services here."

. ACTEW's proposed broadband communications network will support a comprehensive range of telephony, Internet access, high speed data and video services, and could extend to include services such as high-speed connections to corporate local area networks and videoconferencing to facilitate telecommuting telecommuting, an arrangement by which people work at home using a computer and telephone, transmitting work material to a business office by means of a modem and telephone lines; it is also known as telework. . In addition, the proposed network will provide a framework for utility-specific applications, such as outage monitoring, customer energy management and even remote meter reading. The ACTEW network is proposed to be an open standards-based switched digital broadband platform which will provide capacity for a broad range of telecommunications services. ACTEW is currently in negotiations with an Australian telephony service operator to provide service, marketing and sales support in ACTEW's markets.

The BroadBand/SAT solution will provide a unique value proposition, due to its incremental deployability. ACTEW anticipates to first provide telephony to its customers, then add high-speed data, Internet access, video and utilities-management applications as their business case dictates -- all on a single platform.

"BroadBand's global FLX platform offers ACTEW a single, integrated solution that accelerates their business case by enabling them to acquire moderate marketshare in multiple services, versus large marketshare of a single service," said David E. Orr, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of BroadBand Technologies, Inc. "Our platform provides a path to bundled service revenues that is cost-effective, field tested and more flexible than today's single-service digital loop carrier In telephone communications, a technology that increases the number of channels in the local loop by converting analog signals to digital and multiplexing them back to the end office.  offerings. Our solution is extremely attractive to new entrants into the international marketplace, ranging from competitive local exchange carriers to public utilities and independent telephone companies. FLX is the most mature, field deployable platform available that provides a migration path to multiple broadband services over a single platform, while reducing operating costs by up to 50% over existing solutions that are currently in the field."

International Partnership Will Drive Network Build-Out

BroadBand will collaborate with their French partner, SAT (GROUPE SAGEM), to provide an integrated narrowband/broadband solution. BroadBand will provide switching and transport capabilities with the FLX-2500 platform. SAT will be responsible for seamlessly integrating the narrowband/broadband technology of SAT's BroadWave and TANGARA Wireline systems with BroadBand's SDB infrastructure, creating a technologically advanced, full service broadband A traditional fixed broadband network provides its services to a location/port. Multiple devices may connect to these services through the residential LAN and a common residential gateway. However, services are typically not individualized for these devices or the users using them.  network. ACTEW's fully configured network will be based on switched digital broadband, fiber-to-the-curb architecture.

"This new opportunity for SAT expands our international activities in the Pacific Rim, and brings a best-in-class, fiber-based telephony, high-speed data and video solution to an important market," said the management of SAT (GROUPE SAGEM). "Our experience as a world leader in telecommunications solutions, coupled with BroadBand's global field experience with their FLX platform, will enable us to provide ACTEW with a powerful, cost-effective and evolvable network for their customers."
