There are a number of types of security appliances.  from Espion International (Pink Sheets: EPLJ).

The bank reported that from October 28 - November 26, 2006, Espion's Interceptor averaged an accuracy rate of greater than 99.999 percent in blocking spam messages during this period. The Interceptor appliance analyzed almost 7.16 million e-mails sent to Britton & Koontz addresses, an average of more than 238,600 every day.

The Interceptor blocked spam messages before they reached end-users' inboxes, using the Espion Probabilistic (probability) probabilistic - Relating to, or governed by, probability. The behaviour of a probabilistic system cannot be predicted exactly but the probability of certain behaviours is known. Such systems may be simulated using pseudorandom numbers.  Reasoning[TM] (EPR EPR Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

"The Interceptor is so easy to operate, that many days I do nothing but look at the report that it generates," said Curtis Moroney, Britton & Koontz's systems administrator. Moroney has been dealing with spam-related issues for almost ten years; he has seen the problem get progressively worse, and says Espion's Interceptor helps him stay ahead of spammers. "Its artificial intelligence engine automatically detects and learns patterns that we might otherwise miss. In addition, it is able to quickly learn and identify new spam patterns within seconds to recognize and trap future messages with the same pattern."

Moroney noted that the flow of incoming spam now dwarfs the number of legitimate incoming e-mails on a daily basis, saying that on an average business day, only one-half of one percent of e-mails are actually intended for Britton & Koontz's employees. "We've received a number of calls from competitors, telling me they do a great job at stopping spam," he said. "But Interceptor does a superior job, and I see no reason at all to change."

Espion's family of Interceptor e-mail security appliances begin at less than $10,000. More information is available from the company's website, www.espionintl.com.
