Briton drowns; world ROUND-UP.


AN elderly British tourist drowned after being swept away by sea currents in South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. .

The accident happened on Monday as Peter Copping, 72, from Norwich, was swimming off Kariega main beach at Port Alfred Port Alfred is a small town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated on the eastern seaboard of the country at the mouth of the Kowie River, almost exactly half-way between the larger cities of Port Elizabeth and East London.  with friends and family.

Police said two of the people he had been swimming with left the water before they realised that he and a 47-year-old woman were in trouble.

The woman was rescued but Mr Copping was swept away by the current.

His body was later spotted about 10 yards from where he had drowned.
