British pair step up bid for Berlin games; ATHLETICS.


CHRISTINE OHURUOGU Christine Ohuruogu (born May 17, 1984 in east London) is an English sprinter of Nigerian heritage who specialises in the 400 metres - the event for which she is the current World Champion.

The duo, who won gold and silver respectively in Osaka two years ago, have not had the chance to show that impressive form recently due to a lack of races.

However, they are determined to give it their best shot despite being well aware the odds are stacked against them with American Sanya Richards Sanya Richards (born February 26, 1985 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a track and field athlete who competes internationally for the United States. She was a gold medalist in the 4x400m relay at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.  reigning supreme this summer and many other world-class rivals ahead of them in the rankings.

Both athletes have yet to run under 51 seconds, indeed Sanders has seen herself not included in the "A" race at the DN Galan Super Grand Prix in Stockholm today.

The 27-year-old, who has won in Crete and London in the past fortnight, knows she will probably have to run sub-50sec to make the Berlin final.

Meanwhile Ohuruogu, who competes in Wattenscheid, Germany tomorrow, has been struggling with a tight hamstring after winning the World trials three weeks ago and had to withdraw from Paris and London meetings.
