British hopes high after Oscar nominations.

KATE WINSLET said last night she was "thrilled" to be nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role in The Reader.

There are plenty of British hopes in this year's nominations, with Slumdog Millionaire being given 10 Oscar nods including best film.

The movie is vying in the best film category with Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which scooped 13 Academy Awards nominations.

Double Golden Globe winner Winslet plays a former concentration camp guard in The Reader. She said: "I'm extremely happy to have been nominated."

Slumdog Millionaire's 18-year-old star Dev Patel said: "It's just amazing. For Slumdog Millionaire to be included in the nominations for the Oscars is a huge honour.

"When we first began working on the film, I don't think any of us ever imagined that we might end up attending the Oscars ceremony as a result."

As well as the film's director, Danny Boyle, being nominated for an Oscar, Slumdog features in categories including adapted screenplay, cinematography and sound editing, as well as two original song nominations.
