British hopes high after Oscar nominations.

Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born October 5, 1975) is a five-time Academy Award-nominated, Emmy Award-nominated, BAFTA, Grammy and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning English actress.
 said last night she was "thrilled" to be nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role in The Reader.

There are plenty of British hopes in this year's nominations, with Slumdog Millionaire being given 10 Oscar nods including best film.

The movie is vying in the best film category with Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which scooped 13 Academy Awards nominations.

Double Golden Globe winner Winslet plays a former concentration camp guard in The Reader. She said: "I'm extremely happy to have been nominated."

Slumdog Millionaire's 18-year-old star Dev Patel Dev Patel [1] (born April 1990 in Harrow, Middlesex) is an English actor who currently plays Anwar Kharral in the E4 teen drama, Skins. He attended Whitmore High School. Dev has a Black Belt in Taekwon-do.  said: "It's just amazing. For Slumdog Millionaire to be included in the nominations for the Oscars is a huge honour.

"When we first began working on the film, I don't think any of us ever imagined that we might end up attending the Oscars ceremony as a result."

As well as the film's director, Danny Boyle, being nominated for an Oscar, Slumdog features in categories including adapted screenplay, cinematography cinematography: see motion picture photography.
