British financial leader adds enterprise-wide access to Interleaf document management solution; Abbey National incorporates 15,000 WorldView viewers and satellite technology for information distribution to 675 offices.

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996--Interleaf Inc. (NASDAQ:LEAF), the leading supplier of document management solutions, today announced that Abbey National plc deployed 15,000 WorldView Viewers to provide enterprise-wide viewing and distribution of its electronic documents.

This builds upon Abbey National's core of Interleaf integrated document management and electronic publishing solutions. Abbey National expects cost savings from Interleaf technology of more than 1.5 million pounds in the first year of use alone.

Interleaf's WorldView distribution system is helping Abbey National continue to streamline its operations by moving the company away from paper-based business processes toward online information distribution. Using WorldView, Abbey National's staff members can quickly search document collections for any combination of words, create annotations and use hyperlinks and full-text retrieval capabilities to find the information they need on company procedures or new products.

Documents, which are as long as 2,500 pages, may be in a variety of formats, including text, spreadsheet, graphics, audio and text. Abbey National is already rolling out WorldView at 675 branch offices and support centers in the U.K. Data is held on a local server in each branch and, using a satellite link, is updated overnight from the head office's central server. The new system can transmit up to 150 megabytes each night.

Fast access to the latest corporate information is a critical part of customer service for Abbey National. Peter Greenfield, business communications manager at Abbey National, explained, "If customers see a TV commercial for a new product, the last thing they want is to walk into a branch and find staff have to refer to a leaflet or colleague for details."
